The founder of the Moorish Science Temple of America and the Moorish Divine and National movement is Prophet Noble Drew Ali. He was born on January 8th, 1886 in North Carolina. Moorish Americans have celebrated the Prophet’s birthday since the Prophet was in the flesh and since he transcended in 1929. A verbal statement is recorded as saying:
Bro. J. Blakely Bey stated that the Holy Prophet said “celebrate my birthday January the 8th, invite your Asiatic friends to come out and enjoy it with you. Yes, bring out your baskets of food to the Temple and banquet them.”
Also on the 8th of January the Moorish Americans celebrated what they call a Moorish Christmas Day. These events were formed because our people had recently exited out of slavery around two generations before; all they knew were Christian celebrations, pale-skin European and Americanize traditions. So the Moorish Americans had their own celebrations after waking up, but with some familiarity so that others can understand the events. Customs were needed to keep the Moors focus and in communion with one another. The Prophet’s birthday brought the Moors closer together to reflect on the blessing of the Great God Allah sending a prepared redeemer to wake up the sleeping Moorish Americans in the western hemisphere to their true nationality, birthright, divine creed and more. The Moorish Christmas Day was done on the same day and involves the Moors choosing an individual to give a gift to ahead of time, and on that day they exchange gifts with one another. Gifts are also given to the Moorish children so they can also have a good time. Nothing but festivities, gifts, food and forming the atmosphere of unity for the Moorish Americans. Just to show how long these celebrations have been going on, a newspaper article in the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper done on January 8th, 1972 states:
“Moorish Science Temple Celebration
The Moorish Science Temple of America, Inc. will hold the annual celebration of the Moor’s Christmas on Jan. 8, the birthday of Prophet Noble Drew Ali who was born in the state of North Carolina in 1886 and founded the Moorish Science Temple of America in 1913 A.D. in Newark, New Jersey. The New Year celebration will take place on Jan. 15, seven days after the Moorish Christmas Day at the 762 W. Baltimore St. temple.”
As you can see in the above article, there was a recognition of the Prophet’s birthday on the 8th of January, a Moorish Christmas Day and also January the 15th was known as the Moorish New Year. Within the Reincarnated Prophet lineage, the Moorish Americans would set aside one day every month to celebrate the birthdays of all those who had a birthday within that same month. Again, a unity celebration so the Moors can fellowship with one another. Where there is unity, there is strength. When we have a community atmosphere, it will be clear what we are fighting for, striving for and help to keep our eyes on the process of freedom and Naturalization, Colonization and Compensation for all Moorish-Americans. Below you will see invited guests, students, members and Citizens from subordinate Temple #1 in Kings County, New York Republic (Brooklyn, New York) of Moorish Science Temple The Divine and National Movement of North America, Inc #13 The Moorish American National Republic continuing the annual celebrations in 2014.
The Moorish Americans spent the night at a Senegalese restaurant. Senegal is known for its Moorish and Hebrew culture. In some of the pictures you see the restaurant owner wearing a fez, but his fez is shorter than the Moorish American’s religious and national headdress; the high fez. Our Prophet Noble Drew Ali, who was a Hebrew Prophet brought us the high fez with the 12 inch tassel as a distinction. Amazing how our history comes full circle.
