Plantation tokens were used after those held as slaves were set free yet wished to stay and work on the plantation. They were compensated with tokens for their labor that could be used for trading goods they needed locally. The Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln is also mention. Keep in mind the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 freed the slaves in the South, the 13 Amendment with 20 sections of 1865 freed the slaves nationwide.
